‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to success with Athletic
Thehe first time the Athletic striker competed in England, an young appearing for the reserve team against German opponents at the English ground in the 2015 season, he found the net. The second time he played in England, against the English side two months later, he netted. Another occasion, against the Citizens six weeks after that, indeed, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in 2017, he scored again. A spectacular strike, also. “In fact,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they took him off.
“I was furious,” the forward admits, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the final 45 minutes: I hadn’t yet signed deal, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Man United, the usual talk. I have no idea how true it was, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the training ground, the city, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and a further journey to the UK, this time to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a tough year for the club, partly because of the demands of being here. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have won only one of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in Europe. But, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river accompanied by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in four decades. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and debuting in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he admits.
Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. As the child of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that nurtured Mikel Arteta, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in that summer, he experienced a ACL injury, dropped, a relegation and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of their lives.
“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the first team but with every stage you go through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his debut and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it aids growth. You develop habits new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then head home, as a youngster does. At the complex, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Strength training. With hip imbalance, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. Every small aspect: do them.
“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact countless occasions. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”
Minutes are crucial. He left in tears in the pandemic season, aged 23, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone for your role, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. Especially after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was about endurance. From top scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
