Canada Cleared of American Claims of Rigging Bobsleigh Qualifying Event

Canada's skeleton athletes have been absolved of accusations that they deliberately manipulated a qualifying event for the upcoming Games, which allegedly denied competitors from other nations a chance to qualify.

The Core Allegation and Investigation

A prominent American athlete a five-time Olympian alleged the team from Canada of pulling a majority of its entered athletes from a race in Lake Placid. The allegation was this reduced the field, making fewer qualifying points available. Despite winning the event, the American athlete failed to earn her qualifying position for the Milan-Cortina Games.

“The current IBSF Rules permit National Federations to pull competitors from an event at any time,” stated the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

Following an investigation, the IBSF announced it would take no action, rejecting the allegations as no rules were broken of its regulations.

Defense and Rationale

In response, the Canadian federation defended the decision, citing athlete welfare and the need for recovery. They stated that some athletes had already raced multiple times that week and the move was “correct, clear and in keeping with both athlete welfare and the sport's fairness.”

Coaches from the US, Denmark, Israel, and Malta had voiced “deep worry” about the selection system's integrity.

Uhlaender's Olympic Quest

For Katie Uhlaender, the 2026 Olympics represent her last Games. While she can still qualify, the probable American berths are expected to go to other athletes. Uhlaender is a former world champion whose best Games result was just off the podium in 2014.

Broader Context

The controversy comes during a time of heightened tension in sports between the two North American nations. Statements from political figures and tariff impositions have fueled a spirited sporting rivalry. Recent memorable clashes include heated ice hockey matches and a seven-game baseball championship between teams from the neighboring nations.
