Chicago White Sox Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Major $34 Million Deal.
In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract with the power-hitting player.
Financial Terms and Incentives
The contract features a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16 million for the next season and $17 million for the final year.
Notably, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250K for finishing in the top ten.
- An identical bonus for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.
His deal provides that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his approval and grants him a unrestricted player at the end of the contract. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.
Compensation and Historical Context
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club get a supplemental fee of 15% triggered incentive payments.
Murakami will become the fourth-ever Japanese-born to play for the South Siders, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 in February, enters a young core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth.
