HBO's It Spinoff Debuts Second Sooner Than Planned on HBO Max

Excitement is building for the horror series It: Welcome to Derry, already garnering praise and incorporating elements from other Stephen King works. Just one day after launch, the network declared that episode two will premiere ahead of schedule, released fittingly for Halloween.

Premiere Shift Details

Starting on the last day of October at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, the second episode of It: Welcome to Derry will make its debut on HBO's online platform, prior to its traditional TV airing. Future chapters of the show's first season will premiere on Sundays on both HBO and its streaming arm, culminating in the season finale on December 14th.

Series Overview

Taking place within the world of King's It, the new series draws from the classic book while expanding on the setting realized by director Andy Muschietti in the two It films. It Chapter One focused on adolescents confronting terrifying threats, thus it's suitable that this show follows in those footsteps. However, the debut of the streaming show shows it aimed to increase the tension, delivering heightened horror than Muschietti’s films and creating a dark atmosphere for the rest of the season.

Story World and Concepts

Taking place in the 1960s, the series introduces a new generation of adults and children living in a outwardly charming locale masking a dark secret. The town operates on a cruel, recurring cycle—characterized by aggression, prejudice, and paranormal events, as a terrifying being returns every 27 years. While Welcome to Derry might seem like it leans too heavily to the movies on the surface, what distinguishes the streaming show is its dual perspective—narrated via the perspectives of kids and grown-ups at the same time. The kids are particularly vulnerable to the monster's horror, but grown-ups don't escape dealing with their individual fears arising from Derry’s deep-seated bigotry and covert otherworldly powers.

Episode 2 premieres on October 31 at 12 a.m. Pacific Time.
