Heavy Downpours Exacerbate Conditions for Uprooted Gazans, Agencies Caution
Heavy storms over the recent period have worsened the already dire circumstances of the vast number of uprooted Palestinians in the region, according to aid agencies.
"Horrendous" Weather Poses Severe Dangers
A spokesman described the weather overnight as "terrible", with downpours so severe that as much as 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the ground.
"The recent weather was really difficult for the people. The heavy rains were so powerful... And the gales were so strong," noted the spokesperson.
There is extreme worry that young ones sheltering in temporary structures in wet garments will contract hypothermia and other ailments.
Casualties and Extensive Destruction
The health ministry have stated that one baby has succumbed from the cold and a minimum of 11 other people have lost their lives in structural failures due to the severe weather.
Other reports put a greater fatality count. Officials said that multiple residential buildings had collapsed completely and dozens had collapsed partially.
- Almost 55,000 families impacted by rains.
- More than 40 designated refuges severely flooded.
- Countless residents forced to find new shelter.
Aid Efforts Considered Insufficient
Organizations have escalated shipments of shelter, bedding and clothing since the halt in hostilities commenced, but they stress there is still not enough aid entering.
"Agencies are striving constantly to bring in that aid and to distribute it, but the size of the needs is so enormous that we still have a great number of individuals and minors who are truly struggling each evening," stated one spokesperson.
Long-Term Concerns and Ceasefire Provisions
The next stage of the agreement involves proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the withdrawal of troops, and other provisions.
Humanitarian bodies have underscored the necessity for "increased and sustained humanitarian assistance to meet pressing and long-term needs."
The hostilities was initiated by an offensive in late 2023. Later military operations have resulted in a significant number of lives lost in the area, according to health ministry figures.
