Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Inclusion in English Test Series Squad

England have chosen a twelve-player squad just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.

Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's fitness.

The other seamers round out the bowling group, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir enters the final team.

Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted several past matches.

During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.

Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.

At a venue renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers is still the probable choice.

Spin Options Weighed

Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.

But the coach has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.

In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”

“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.

“I won't let my secrets out so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
