The royal figure gives up his honor as Duke of York.

Royal figure under scrutiny
He has been under mounting pressure over his links with Jeffrey Epstein.

Prince Andrew is relinquishing his titles, among them the York's Duke, he has stated in a personal statement.

He has been under mounting attention over his links with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with requests for the royal household to take steps against him.

That now looks to have resulted in the prince deciding to voluntarily give up his titles and to relinquish participation of the prestigious order.

In his announcement he said he continued to "vigorously deny the accusations against me".

"In consultation with the King, and my direct and broader family, we have agreed the continued accusations about me divert from the work of the monarch and the Royal Family," said a statement from him.

"I have decided, as I always have, to put my responsibility to my relatives and land first.

"I stand by my decision five years ago to step back from official duties.

"With the King's consent, we feel I must now go a additional measure. I will therefore no longer hold my honor or the distinctions which have been bestowed on me. As I have said previously, I strongly dispute the allegations against me."

Prince Andrew has encountered a number of controversies, such as a lawsuit he resolved with the plaintiff, questions about his money matters and his involvement with an suspected Chinese spy.

He will continue to be a prince - but will discontinue to be the the Duke, a honor bestowed from his parent, the late Queen Elizabeth.

The prince had already stopped to be a "participating figure" and had given up the use of his HRH title and no longer appeared at official royal events. His position now will be even more reduced.

His ex-wife will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer Duchess of York, but their daughters will continue to have the honor of princesses.

He has been under intense scrutiny over his connections with disgraced financier Epstein, more in recent times including inquiries about when he had truly severed communication.

In his television appearance, Prince Andrew had said that he had cut off all ties with Epstein after they had been seen together in NYC in December 2010.

But emails sent in early 2011 later came to light indicating that he had privately stayed in communication with Epstein, for example exchanging a message: "Stay in contact and we'll have further interactions soon!"

There had been mounting displeasure in the royal household at the issues that remained to surround the royal.

In the coming days a posthumous memoir by the accuser will be issued which is anticipated to draw further scrutiny on Prince Andrew's association with Virginia Giuffre and Jeffrey Epstein.
